Birthing a Business

My 8 year old niece asked me the other day “Aunty Ann, how do you start a business?”. I gave her an answer along the lines of you start with an idea, and then you get an ABN and then there is a whole bunch of other stuff you have to do. She was satisfied with this answer. How do you become a parent? You usually get pregnant and birth a baby (acknowledging there are a myriad of other ways to become a parent), and then there is a whole bunch of other stuff you have to do.

And isn’t it all that other stuff where things really get complicated and confusing?

To draw a parallel to parenting, I feel like my business is still in those first six weeks of parenthood. I started off jubilant, proud that I had managed to get as far as I had, I had never done anything like this before. Then I started getting confused and worried, was I doing this right? Then I started looking online for help, the business equivalent of Dr Google! I need to have FB, IG, LinkedIn, blog, what even are these SEO things? Thankfully I have found a few helpful places and people to assist me along the way, so I listened to their advice and chose to do what suited me and my unique circumstances at the moment (you probably aren’t going to find a great deal of me on Instagram).

I hope I can be one of the helpful voices to you during your early days of parenting. My business is about to move into bigger and better things, and I think I am beginning to get past the cluster feeding neediness stage. Admittedly onto a new stage that is going to have equally as many, but different needs, because that is the thing with parenting and business I am learning - there is always something new to learn.

I am investing in my knowledge over the next few months and have advance pelvic floor, bladder and bowel professional development lined up, along with a baby wearing course - stay tuned for my new offerings in the new year.

Here’s to growing strong together,
